Norman Smyth was born in Belfast in 1933. Although virtually self-taught, he studied for a time at Belfast College of Art. He was elected a member of the Royal Ulster Academy in 1999 and has had many exhibitions in Belfast, Dublin and London. His unique style in painting people is self-evident, as he depicts village and rural life in the West and North of Ireland.
