Arthur K Maderson, b.1942

Irish by inclination, Arthur Maderson was actually born in London in 1942, and studied Fine Art from 1959 to 1963 at Camberwell School of Art, London, winning the Anna Berry Award in 1963, in open competition with leading Art Schools. Although Maderson continued to paint on a regular basis, it was only in 1982, at the age of 40 that he felt sufficiently confident to exhibit. From this period, he has enjoyed considerable success, and this success has been replicated in Ireland, where his reputation as a painter of distinction and passion is firmly established. He works at a frantic pace with dedication, determination and unflagging vigour, and now divides his time between Ireland and a small hamlet high in a largely unpopulated mountainous region of the Cevenne, in the South of France. As to this transition from Ireland to France, Maderson observes ‘It is curious to move from a world of low key, soft tertiary colours, borne of high levels of atmospheric moisture, to fiercely aggressive sunlight, cutting and dividing forms, into intense stabs of brilliant, heavily saturated colours … delicate salmon against bursts of intense electric blues … a world which takes on the appearance of having been formed by crushing jewels … what a challenge, to paint with crushed jewels!’ Arthur Maderson has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy and he has represented Ireland in many prestigious exhibitions. Maderson’s subtle exploration of a rich kaleidoscope of ‘raw’ visual information is achieved with a fierce determination, all part of his artistic genius. An outstanding artist of his generation.

Enter your Maximum Bid, i.e. the highest amount youre willing to bid for a particular lot in the auction. The system will automatically raise your bid, only as much as is needed, for you to remain the highest bidder and only up to your chosen Maximum Bid, which does not include the buyers commission (VAT Inclusive) payable on all lots.

Please note that all Maximum Bids are confidential and are not disclosed. The system will endeavour to purchase your lot at the lowest hammer price, as is permitted by other bids or reserves, if any, and subject to the Terms and Conditions of Sale, and the auctioneer disclaims responsibility for any failure, for whatever reason, in this regard.

The system will advance your bid automatically, on your behalf, only when required, up to the maximum you have chosen. This means that you may win an item for less than your maximum bid, but it also means that you can be outbid if someone else enters a higher Maximum Bid. If you are outbid for a lot, an email will be sent to you to notify you and to invite you to increase your Maximum Bid. Please note, if a bid is received in the final minute of a timed auction, the clock resets back to sixty seconds, in order to give other bidders an opportunity to respond.
